Best "DIY Pedal 101" course online

I started cloning effects a few years back and wanted to learn more about how all these electric components work together. Brian's course explained all the beginner stuff about electronics applied to audio in a few minutes, where I had to scratch my head on the internet for month when I started this. The beginner course taught me basic stuff I never quite comprehended, with simple words, self-explanatory schematics and breadboards, audio demos every time... Now I'm ready to get to the Intermediate course to delve a bit more into all this !

    Awesome course for beginners!

Even though I've had researched all of the circuits and blocks discussed in this course on my own before discovering this course, it still provided lots of useful insight and practical instructions on how to get started with actually building and testing the circuits. For me, there were many "A-Ha!" moments, where a more concise and useful/practical explanations and solutions were offered for the concepts that I knew before, but still was not sure I understood well. A great resource for those who want to start making their own pedals.

Brian did a great job putting this course together. The step-by-step approach helped to keep the amount of information from becoming too overwhelming. The course taught me how to read schematics and how to make informed decisions to take those schematics and turn them into something unique. Thank you!

    Beginner's Course

I just finished the Course and loved it! I have a degree in electronics and I really like the way he explained the principles. I have been playing guitar for years and have obviously bought many pedals along the way. I have done some mods, and even repairs on this pedals when necessary, but I really enjoyed how Brian broke down each circuit into the "blocks". That will make it much easier to mod each section and have fun getting the sound I want out of a pedal. I've signed up for the Intermediate course and can't wait to keep going! The course is well worth the investment. Also, I highly recommend getting the Breadboard Module, it will make your life a LOT easier! --Phil Carter, Detroit, Mi

Saved me so much time! Awesome demos of so many pedal circuits.

In an online world of numerous diy forums, blogs and seemingly infinite pages to search, Brian Wampler's beginner's how to course accelerated my learning and answered a ton of questions. I could have spent a many more hours and late nights searching for these answers But this course compacted much of that into a pleasant, structured journey that I can refer back to at any time. Now I'm modeling circuits in SPICE, and have a solid foundation in tonal options for amplifier circuits. Great course and community experience!

    Beginners Basic Course

I almost didn't take this course because I have some electronics and pedal experience, but this course provided knowledge where I've been week, particularly about transistors. I have primarily worked with Op Amp circuits, but tried to avoid transistor circuits, as I have had little knowledge regarding them. I now have a bit better understanding of transistors and am now confident that I can work through those types of circuits.

After completing this course, I know have a good understanding of how to modify these basic circuits and make them my own. It also makes it much easier to follow the circuit when building. Perfect and worth the money and time

Brian has done an amazing job at laying out the basics of pedal building. I myself went through all the advanced electronics programs in the Navy and I understand how all of the components and theory works, But as you can imagine, they dont show you how to actually build something, What the physical lugs are on a pot compared to a schematic, Or what a BJT sounds like. So this course was so perfectly put together. Thank you so much for the time and effort and willingness to share. You are the man. And yes I will only buy Wampler pedals now : )

I loved this, as Brian says at the end, there just aren't a lot of books or resources out there that teach you this sort of thing. I like to learn from books but learning from the master himself in these videos is pretty damn cool. The schematics are all here and he goes through the breadboard for each circuit clearly. Above all this course encourages you to experiment and leads you along paths and gives you the confidence to do that. I have to go now and start the intermediate course ... bye.

This course is pure gold. Brian’s causal and conversational style combined with his “Lego block” approach made me feel like I can do this. In the past, I’ve worked through multiple books on the topic, but always hit a brick wall. The course was unbelieveable and I can't wait to get started on the intermmediate course. As an EE student, I had doubts about this course because I figured I could easily find this information online by searching through forums. Little did I know the specific details and knowledge I would gain from Brian through his experience in this field. That's what you're paying for, and it is sooo worth it. Great course for anyone wanting to design audio circuits

I recently completed the Beginner's Guide: How to Design Your Own Guitar Pedal Circuit and I have to say, it was a fantastic experience! Whether you’re a beginner just starting or someone with a bit of background in electronics, this course does a great job of breaking things down. Brian is really knowledgeable and had a way of explaining complex concepts in a simple manner that made everything easier to understand. I appreciated the hands-on projects that allowed me to apply what I was learning in real-time. It really helped solidify my grasp of the material. The Guitar Pedal Course community is a great asset. I get to connect with fellow builders who are just as passionate about audio design. Sharing ideas and troubleshooting together made the learning experience even better. Overall, I’d highly recommend this course to anyone interested in audio circuit design. It offers a great mix of theory and practice, and I walked away feeling much more confident in my skills!

    Total confidence boost.

Brian hits the nail on the head in as simple of terminology as you could hope for in a course. The video lengths and topics are all laid out and explained exceptionally well making it easy to go back and forth within the course. I have built numerous pedals in the past from kits and while cool I still had no idea what was going on so I took it even further purchasing great PCB’s, sourcing all of my own parts, enclosures etc… and building alongside supplied documentation. Basically painting with numbers. You simply find “R19” on the parts list page and you plug that value into the board and solder it in, learning nothing about why or how the part or value effects anything. Schematics still resembled cave paintings to me and troubleshooting was a nightmare when a build was finished and something was wrong. I might as well have been looking at a completed circuit from another builder as I still had no idea where to begin or anything that I had done aside from soldering parts. Long winded but if you happen to be a Tinkerer and want to know why something ticks I cannot recommend this course enough. Well done Brian W.!

Enjoying it! Reminds me of a fun college class!

I recommend taking notes as Brian is speaking. I know how to breadboard so the detailed explanation of that is less interesting, but his explanation of how each component affects the sound, gain, tone, etc. is important. Writing down the key points as he speaks will aid you in reviewing the work later. I have made a notebook of the circuits with diagrams and notes. Treat this like a college course - make calculations for the filter stages, identify the signal path, calculate the gain. When bread boarding the circuits, use your oscilloscope and probe the paths. Look at the signals and see how the components change things. Use a sine wave input signal too. This makes it easy to see the changes. This brings me right back to college! Love it!

    Go beyond the kits

My goal in taking Brian's course was to go beyond assembling kits. I wanted to be able to understand what the pieces were doing together, whether I was looking at the schematic or the circuit board, and change things if I wanted to. I can say this course went above and beyond that for me and I have already begun designing some circuits myself, and have modded a few friends pedals. If you are at all interested in whats going on under the hood of your pedals, want to dive into the building blocks of audio circuitry, or build and mod your own pedals, I highly recommend this course. I’m 72 years old, slept through electronics in high school and later kind of felt like was missing out on something. Schematics were Sanskrit to me. I started building kits and realized the schematics were useless to me if I had a problem. I saw a Facebook ad for Brian’s course and figured I’d give it a shot. What I have learned from his engaging and highly informative course cannot be overstated. I now design and build my my own pedals from what Brian has taught me. I would pay for the pedals I’ve built. Great entry point into pedals!

Wampler did a great job of providing examples of circuits to slowly build upon. Really easy to follow along, taught me how to read schematics and mess around with diagrams on the web, so I can continue on my own. An empowering course!
